Eighteen religious leaders in Indonesia representing Buddhism, Catholicism, Confucianism, Islam and Protestantism have issued a joint message calling for the nation to maintain pluralism.
Note from Yunus:
It is good to know that Indonesia is non secular republic with a state idology (the Pancasila) that has as its first principle: "belief in the one and only God."
88 % of Indonesians is Muslim, making this country with its approximately 222 Muslims the country with the biggest amount of Muslims, and thus also having more Muslim citizens than the whole of the Arabic peninsula together.
The Indonesian Constitution nevertheless also states that "every person shall be free to choose and to practice the religion of his/her choice" and it "guarantees all persons the freedom of worship, each according to his/her own religion or belief". Officially however, only six religions are recognized. These are: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
