Iran builds complex for Jewish minority

In a move to prove its goodwill to other religions and official efforts to protect the freedom of religion, Iran is building a huge new cultural and sports complex for its Jewish minority. Iran's Jewish community numbers around 20,000 people and remains the largest in the Middle East after Israel's.

*Iran only recognises Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam as official religions, and converting from Islam to one of the other religions is prohibited.

*Other religions that are not recognized can face problems in the Islamic republic of Iran. Just a week ago for example, The Baha'i International Community made it public to the world that they received a copy of a confidential 2006 letter from Iran's Ministry of Science, Research and Technology instructing Iranian universities to expel any student who is discovered to be a Baha'i. This incident only adds to their long history of persecution and harassment in Iran.
